Four Criteria for Construction Accounting Software

NOTE: The editor of the article linked, Houston Neal, works for the commercial enterprise Software Advice. I am not knowledgable enough regarding construction software to either endorse or object to his business--nevertheless, I thought that he made some good points about desirable qualities of construction software.

Houston Neal, in an article called "Five Reasons to Replace Accounting Software," cited elimination of double-entry (presumably in the same way that a sales journal replaces the double-entry form of a general journal), provide improved audit trail, handle multiple pay rates, manage equipment and machines and improve job costing. While the first is only acceptable for internal use situations, the last four are certainly worthy goals for any computerized accounting system and appropriate (if not necessarily exhaustive) criteria to use in evaluating either a present construction accounting system or in helping decide between alternatives if a construction is replacing/upgrading or initiating an accounting system.

Certainly, evaluation of a business's accounting, whether construction or otherwise, is appropriate to make sure that a business has both effective and efficient software. I also recommend "CPA Firm Technology Blog," "Do You Know," or "The TechGap" as good blogs to visit if you are looking at evaluating the quality of your construction accounting software.

I belong to the construction industry, and I personally believe in an accounting software making business processes much easier and efficient. While I need concentrate in the in-field progress, I could certainly use an efficient help by means of a software that automates the accounting tasks. Besides, I always have Sage Master Builder support that's always ready to assist me on their software.

It also goes without saying that we evaluate every tool that we use in the business, and Sage Timberline Office cuts above the rest when it comes to meeting our accounting standards.

The real beauty behind accounting programs is their accessibility. Whenever and wherever you are, you can monitor your business’ financial reports and progress. Since it’s easy to use, you can do it on your own, even without the help of an accountant. Although, basic accounting skills might be an advantage to operate the software quicker, it doesn’t take that much time to learn the ins and outs of it. You’ll learn on the fly.

Each industry has specific and unique accounting needs, which is why it is critical to choose an accounting program that will address these particular needs. Even in other businesses and fields, it is vital to determine what kind or type of program will best suit their enterprise. To do this, you must determine your accounting system, and from this you will know the accounting features you will need and narrow the search for an accounting program package.
